Nothing gets deleted when you downgrade. If your data exceeds the new limit, iCloud simply stops syncing new photos and backups until you're under quota — your existing data stays intact.
Downgrade iCloud+ on iPhone
- Open iCloud settings. Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage (or "Manage Storage").
- Change your plan. Tap "Change Storage Plan" → "Downgrade Options", and sign in if prompted.
- Pick the free tier. Select the free 5 GB plan (or a cheaper paid tier) and confirm. The change takes effect when the current billing period ends.
- Shrink your data first. Before the downgrade kicks in, delete old device backups (Settings → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups) and consider exporting photos — that's usually where the space went.
What happens if you're over the free limit
Over-quota iCloud accounts stop syncing: new photos don't upload, device backups fail, and iCloud email may stop receiving. Nothing already stored is deleted immediately, but you should either shrink below 5 GB or move photos to another service before downgrading.
