How to cancel HBO Max

Updated 2026-07-09 · GhostSubs guides

HBO Max (which spent a couple of years renamed "Max" before switching back) can be billed by Warner Bros. Discovery directly, by an app store, by Amazon, or bundled into a cable or mobile plan — and each has its own cancel switch.

Direct subscribers can cancel in about a minute from the website. Everyone else needs to find their biller first: your receipt emails or card statement name them.

Cancel HBO Max (billed directly)

  1. Sign in on the web. Go to hbomax.com (max.com redirects) in a browser and sign in.
  2. Open subscription settings. Click your profile → Settings → Subscription.
  3. Cancel the subscription. Choose "Cancel Subscription" and confirm through the retention offers. Note the access-until date on the confirmation.
  4. Third-party billing. If Settings shows your provider as Apple, Google, Amazon, or a carrier, cancel there: iOS Subscriptions, Play Store subscriptions, Amazon Memberships, or your carrier's add-on manager respectively.

Bundled with cable or a phone plan?

Some cable and mobile plans include HBO Max at no visible extra cost — in that case there's nothing to cancel on the streaming side, and dropping it means changing the underlying plan with your provider.

Annual plans renew as a single large charge once a year, which is easy to forget. If you're on annual billing, set a reminder a week before the renewal date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep watching until my period ends?

Yes — cancellation stops future billing but access runs to the end of the current paid month or year.

How do I know who bills me for HBO Max?

Open Settings → Subscription in the app or site; it names your billing provider. Your card statement and receipt emails confirm it.

Is there a pause option?

No official pause — cancel and resubscribe when a show you want returns. Profiles and watch history are retained for a period.
